Style: decide which style would complement your room's theme the best, such as contemporary, traditional, eclectic, etc. If the patterns in your other furnishing pieces are large, then try to pick area rugs with a more plain design or smaller patterns.
Color: To help you select area rugs by color, we have created a search filter specifically to do just that and it's located on this page (flower shaped colors above). If you are just beginning to select your colors, starting from area rugs gives you a lot of freedom to create your color scheme and help you build your colors from ground up. If you already have your color scheme in place, remember the rug's color doesn't have to be predominately matching the major color in the room. You could pick an accent color as the dominate color of the rug and remember, the lighter the rug, the bigger will make your place look and the darker the rug, the easier to clean and hide the dirt.
Size: here are some easy tips to measure your space to achieve a perfect balance for looks and practicality.
Measuring for Living room rugs: If you have have a coffee table and would like the area rug to be just an accent rug, measure the width and length of your coffee table and add minimum 2 feet to each number. This will allow a person to walk around the table and still be on the rug. The most common rug size used for this type of setup is a 4' x 6' or a 5' x 8' approximately.
If you do not have a coffee table or would like to cover more of your floor with your rug than just a small portion of it, you can go either with:
A rug which covers only between your furniture. Measure the space going slightly (min 1 inch) under the sofa and love-seat. The most common area rug size for this type of setup is an 8' x 10', 8' x 11' or 9' x 12', approximately.
Or the furniture sit completely on the rug which you would then measure the area where all your furniture will be within the space. The most common area rug size for this type of setup is a 9' x 12' or 10' x 14', approximately.
Measuring for dining room rugs: pull all the chairs out as if everyone was about to sit on the table. Now measure from back legs of two opposite chairs on the width and length of the table. The most common area rugs for dining room are 8' x 10', approximately. And 8' or 10' round for round dining room tables.
Measuring for bedroom rugs: the size of an area rugs would depend if you want you bed sitting on the rug or not, and what size bed you own. Most common size for bedroom area rugs are 8' x 10'.

Color healing is an alternative technique that has been practiced by healers in some of the oriental countries for centuries. One of the techniques used by color healers, that has become most common, is that of visualization: the practitioner pictures the color in his/her mind and then, directs it to that area of the patient that needs to be healed.
Another technique is that of directing color onto the patient externally. The right intensity of the required color is produced by making direct sunlight pass through colored glass, plastic or cellophane. A variation of this method is using a photographic slide projector with colored plastic fixed to the mouth. This is better because the light can be more accurately focused onto the afflicted area.
Hydrochromotherapy involves treatment by the use of color charged water. An ordinary glass of water covered with a piece of colored paper or acetate and kept in the sunlight from six to eight hours becomes medicinal.

Color healing is not magic, it has a scientific explanation. Light or colors have a vibration or energy. As the color enters the body, the energy from each affects one of the seven nerve centers or Chakras that correspond to the body's endocrine glands and cause them to secrete hormones. These hormones influence our bodily functions, thoughts, emotions and moods. Color healing simply rectifies the imbalance in the glandular function brought about by the disharmony of energy in one's being.
This is done by such techniques as visualization, color breathing, drinking charged water, color bathing, using sympathetic magic for distant healing, regulating diet indicated by color, gems, clothes or cloth, decor, and rainbow healing.
Among neutral area rugs gray rugs is the most neutral. Gray rugs are popular because gray has a cooling and stabilizing effect when juxtaposed with more vibrant colors. People who like to live a secluded lives often like to pick gray rugs as gray evokes the feeling of detachment or isolation as well as a neutral, non-invasive feeling. Too much gray or the wrong shades of it however, suggests lack of imagination, character and initiative. So you should be careful not to overdo the decor with gray rugs everywhere. Most people when they talk about neutral rugs, they mean the other neutral colors like beige, tan, ivory and earthtone colors which have more warmth than gray.

Color is light or electromagnetic radiations that are visible. These radiations appear to us as color because of the capability of the object to either absorb or reflect the radiations. A leaf is green because it absorbs all colors except green.
The body and the mind respond to certain radiations in certain ways. This explains the effect of colors on emotions and moods. The type of response or the degree of the response is not the same for all. That is why before color is therapeutically administered, the individual's personal coloration is analyzed.
