Fall is in the air, and for some of us that means the start of a new term at college. Along with buying new books, getting your mind ready for grueling tests and finding all your classes, the start of a new term is also a chance to decorate a whole new dorm room! But how do you design the perfect study space on a budget? The answer isn’t in the furniture, and no, it’s not finding the perfect combination of old pizza boxes and soda cans to cover every surface. A great dorm room has to be built from the ground up, starting with a great area rug! Here are some things to consider when shopping for your back-to-school floor art.
- Size Matters – dorm rooms are notoriously small, so it’s integral to make the most out of the space you have. Keep this in mind when shopping for an area rug. What is the size and shape of the room that you need the rug for? Make sure to measure your area before you shop, otherwise you might end up with a rug that doubles as a welcome mat, because it hangs out your door.
- Location, Location, Location – Once you know what size area rug you need, It’s important to think about where in the room the rug is going to be and what is going to be happening on it. For instance, if the rug is going to be in front of the doorway, under that table you always like to pace around when you are cramming for tests, or in another high traffic area, you will want to make sure that it can stand up to the wear and tear of everyday walking. Also, it is important to think about where your furniture will go in relation to the rug you have chosen. Will your computer chair always catch on the edges? Will corners get rolled up and become a safety hazard because of being too close to the doorway? If you said yes, you might want to rethink your rug placement or size.
- Make it or Break it– Finally, the texture, pattern, and color scheme of your rug can make or break your dorm room style. While it’s important to stay true to your unique aesthetic, sometimes what looks good in the pictures can be over or underwhelming when you finally add it to your space. Dark colors tend to make small spaces look even smaller, and busy patterns with lots of furniture on top could be headache inducing, and no one wants to add a lackluster, boring centerpiece to their decor. If your rug is going to be largely unobstructed, go for a bold conversation starting piece. If your rug will be mostly hidden under furniture, you may want to consider a more subtle pattern that will still look great, even if you can’t see the whole thing.
